Hanging Out With Google

Like other services, Hangouts offers unlimited free messaging and audio/video calls between its users. You can also attach links and files to your messages.

When you download Google Hangouts, it automatically scans both your Google account and your phone book to detect its users among your contacts. When finished, it displays the list like any messenger does, showing Hangouts users first and then the rest of the list.

The service works even if your friend doesn’t have its app installed. A browser version handles audio and video calls well, if you’re authorized on Gmail page or other Google web service. So if you want to speak with someone here, they won’t need to download Google Hangouts at all.

While your messages are stored on Google servers and available from your Gmail account, for audio and video calls Hangouts uses peer-to-peer connection to provide faster and more stable connection.

The Future of Hangouts

If you decide to download Hangouts in 2019, you need to keep in mind that it won’t exist in its current state for long, so this Google Hangouts review will get dated. Google is famous for its tradition of shutting down projects it considers unnecessary, no matter what customers think (so it happens now with Google Plus). As for Hangouts, the plans imply its division into two separate services, one for private users (Hangouts Chat) and the other corporate (Hangouts Meet). We cannot predict what features will remain intact, what will be added or removed. At least, we still have Gmail with all our contacts saved.

Pros

► Free communication within Hangouts;

► More privacy protection, if you use your secondary account;

► Peer-to-peer connection for audio and video calls;

► History stored in Gmail account.

Cons

► It’s about to be reformed soon;

► It’s not as popular as rivals.
